His manager Jens Zimmermann of the German news agency DPA said the 33-year-old man should be operated on as soon as possible, if possible, next week. Nguyen wanted to return after a long injury hiatus in the German Championships from 3 to 6 June in Dortmund and to qualify for his fourth Olympic Games after 2008, 2012 and 2016.
Nguyen, who won a silver medal in everything and on the parallel bars at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, was plagued with lingering injuries time and time again. He was absent from the World Championships at home in 2019 in Stuttgart due to shoulder problems. Last year he only participated in two championships in the German Bundesliga. Most recently, the 33-year-old was only able to train to a limited extent due to problems with his right wrist, and thus was absent from the European Championships in Basel in April.
An unsuccessful exit from the rings in training has now led to the Olympic exit. “I am totally depressed,” said Marcel Nguyen. It remains to be seen whether the three-time European champion will have to end his sports career in addition to his Olympic career. His goal of continuing to do gymnastics in Munich until next year’s European Championships is now “out of reach”.
