The women’s pursuit race was supposed to start in the morning in Kuusamo, Finland. But icy temperatures below minus 20 degrees prevent this – the start is postponed. After the meter shows negative 19 degrees, the green light follows. Men first start with a distance of more than 15 km, then women.
But not everyone agrees. The entire Norwegian team, Saturday’s winner, Ivo Niskanen, as well as Dario Cologne, was unprecedented. “It’s very cold,” explains Graubünden SRF. The four-time Olympic champion has already suffered from lung problems in the past. “It’s the first weekend of the season and I didn’t want to risk anything. The main goals haven’t come yet. In the long run, it definitely makes sense,” says the 35-year-old.
In the absence of a small number of competitors, the Russians have an easy game and occupy the first four places. Alexander Bolchono wins, ahead of Sergey Ustyugo, Artem Maltso and Ivan Jakimushkin. The best Swiss is Roman Furger in 25th place, ahead of Jason Rüesch (26th).
Johaug wins – Fähndrich again in the top 15
Also among the women, 13 athletes did not participate. Unlike the guys, the Norwegians decided to start. Unsurprisingly, the victory goes to Thérèse Juhaug. The three-time World Cup winner defeated Frieda Karlsson (SD) and compatriot Heidi Wing.
Nadine Fähndrich shows a strong race. With a difference of just over a minute and a half, the Swiss from central Switzerland finished 13th in all the races in the opening weekend, and Lorient van der Graaf did not start. (Named)
