Their concert has been cancelled: Lauwarm Band.
They play reggae and wear Rasta – which is exactly why Lauwarm got into trouble in July. Her appearance in Bernese Brasserie Lorraine has been cancelled. Thus the organizers complied with the wishes of the visitors, who accused the band of cultural appropriation. Because all the band members are white.
Such an approach is called abolition of culture. This is a political term for efforts to ignore people accused of discriminatory or unethical behavior in the social and professional environment. In concrete terms: Not being invited from meetings and events and not giving them a platform.
A debate about Winito has now erupted in Germany. For generations, children around the world have celebrated the Native American hero Winito, created by Carl May (1842-1912). On August 11, a new part appeared with The Young Chief Winnetou – for now. Because publisher Ravensburger has already pulled the book from sale. The reason for this is accusations of racism on social media.
Allegations of racism against author of children’s books
This phenomenon is not new. Cancellation culture has already hit in the past. Time and time again, the focus is on the artists and their work. For example, the author of the children’s book Enid Blyton (1897-1968). The Briton is best known for his children’s book series “Five Friends”.
The English Heritage organization, which, among other things, manages the Historic Homes Department and cares about the memory of its famous residents – they put a blue memorial plaque on the former Blyton house in Chessington, southwest London in 1997 – has updated the entry on their website about Blyton in 2020, and wrote that Blyton’s work has been criticized for “racism, xenophobia and its low literary value”.
She referred to the 1966 story “Little Black Doll” in which the doll’s face is washed “clean” by rain. In 1960, Macmillan publishers refused to publish a book by Blyton because it contained “a whiff of ancient xenophobia”.
Controversial reporter praised
Musicians are affected, too. Banjo player Winston Marshall, 34, was forced to leave folk rock band Mumford & Sons last year. With the move he wanted to protect his bandmates, the 34-year-old made the move clear.
Marshall had praised Andy Ngo, 36, a book review of Antifa in March, calling the controversial reporter a “brave man.” Then criticism praised in social media, and some users accused the musician of spreading the outbreak. Sorry, Marshall. Mumford & Sons albums are certified multi-platinum in the UK.
‘There are sometimes hateful misunderstandings’
In Germany in 2020, the dump of Austrian cabaret artist Lisa Eckhart, 29, caused a stir at Hamburg’s Harbourfront Literature Festival. She was accused of using racist and anti-Semitic clichés. After the cry, she was invited again, but she refused.
“There is sometimes a malicious misunderstanding,” Eckhart said at the time. In some there appears to be a traditionally conditioned reflex to respond to stimulus words. How do you deal with anti-Semitism and racism? Have they become a taboo or have they been turned into a joke? “I’m always on the side of humor,” says Eckhart.
TV career ended with a tweet
Actress “Roseanne” Barr (69) buried her career in 2018 with a tweet. She compared Valerie Jarrett, 65, one of US President Barack Obama’s 61-year-old close advisers, to a monkey. “If the Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes had a baby, he would look like Valerie Jarrett,” she wrote in a tweet that she later deleted. And in doing so, she not only referred to the unproven conspiracy theory that Jarrett is a Muslim. Thus Barr discriminated against African American women, as is customary among racists, as ape too.
As a result, her show “Roseanne”, which had returned two months earlier after a 20-year absence from television and was very successful, was discontinued.
The 69-year-old has been dubbed the racist around the world, and her apology for a tweet on Twitter while on the pill was not well received, and has also fallen out with her fellow co-stars. No news has been heard from Barr since then, she has gone into hiding.

You no longer have to watch movies
American film star Woody Allen, 86, does not understand the phenomenon of cultural abolition. “I think this is a temporary phase of stupidity – future generations will laugh at it because it’s just embarrassing,” he told Playboy magazine in July.
Allen has long faced allegations of sexual abuse within the family, which he denies. On August 4, 1992, Woody Allen raped his seven-year-old daughter, Dylan Farrow. The 37-year-old still sticks to the claim to this day. The director denies the assault.
Also causing a stir, he split from wife Mia Farrow, 77, and married his adopted daughter, Son Yi Previn, 51. So there are frequent demands that his films not be shown. (Juma/AFP)
Woke jargon: What does all this mean anyway?
wok: It comes from Afro-American slang and is actually the grammatically incorrect past form of the word “awake”. Nowadays, for some, that means being aware of social grievances, especially when it comes to marginal groups, and doing something about it. However, in the United States, where the word originated, a reinterpretation has already appeared: there the word can already be used in a way that detracts from the “intolerance of other opinions”.
Catalysts: In psychology, this word means an external cause that returns a person with PTSD to the state in which the trauma occurred. This can lead to a strong physical reaction such as fainting, shaking, or uncontrollable aggression. In the meantime, the term is used more broadly and non-specifically and can describe the general feeling of being unwell due to an external stimulus.
open civilization When you adopt a dominant culture, or so you say, you “steal” the achievements of another culture without making up for them, for example in fashion or music.
Culture abolition: The practice of not giving a platform to unwelcome opinions or people and forcing organizers and institutions to remove them from events, boycott them, or terminate them.
Identity Policy: Political action to give a particular group of people, often minorities, greater esteem for improving their social status and increasing their influence.
