According to informed sources, the United States is considering a package of sanctions to prevent China from invading Taiwan. People familiar with the discussions said Tuesday that the European Union is also under diplomatic pressure from the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, to do the same. In either case, sanctions are at stake that go beyond measures already taken in the West to restrict trade with China and investments in sensitive technologies. However, the discussions in Washington and Taipei to pressure the EU envoys are still at an early stage.
At the beginning of August, China responded to the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan with a large-scale military exercise. In return, the United States allowed two cruisers to pass through the straits in front of the island. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and has not ruled out using force to regain control of the island.
