– Venice prohibits tour groups of more than 25 people

In order to combat the negative effects of mass tourism, the city of Venice prohibits tour groups of more than 25 people accompanied by tour guides. This is what the city council decided at its last meeting.
This measure affects the city center and the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Loudspeakers will also be banned on city tours in the future. Community decisions were announced on Saturday.
The measures will come into effect on June 1, 2024. Security Advisor Elisabetta Pesce commented that the aim is to promote sustainable tourism and ensure the protection and security of the city. In addition, “a signal is being sent against unauthorized tour guides,” added Sebastiano Costalonga, the city councilor responsible for commerce.
Also requirements for New Year's Eve
The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, was also quick to sign a regulation to protect public safety on New Year's Eve. From 31 December to 1 January 2024, shops, bars and outdoor kiosks are not permitted to sell or serve drinks in glass bottles, sealed cans and plastic bottles. It is also prohibited to consume any kind of drinks in the street.
The use and possession of pepper spray is also prohibited. The municipality said that failure to comply with this regulation will be punished with a fine ranging from 25 to 500 euros.
