The president of the American news channel CNN, Jeff Zucker, has resigned due to a secret affair with a close colleague. The 56-year-old announced his resignation on Wednesday in a letter to the broadcaster’s staff.
“I certainly wish my tenure here would have ended differently,” the powerful media manager wrote. “But it was a great time. And I loved every minute.” Zucker is also stepping down as head of news and sports at WarnerMedia, CNN’s parent company.
Confusing journalism and politics
The resignation comes after an internal CNN investigation into the behavior of former star presenter Chris Cuomo. He was sacked last December for advising his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, after allegations of harassment by several women. The mingling of press and politics was casting a bad light on CNN.
“As part of the investigation at the time Chris Cuomo at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with one of my closest associates, with whom I have worked for over 20 years,” Zucker said. According to media reports, the woman is CNN’s Marketing Director, Alison Golust.

“I acknowledge that the relationship has evolved over the past few years,” the CNN president said. “I should have disclosed this when it started, but I didn’t. It was wrong. That is why I am quitting today.”
Gollust also released a statement and regretted not publishing the relationship in a timely manner. However, she keeps her job at CNN. Golust worked as chief communications officer for Andrew Cuomo prior to joining CNN.
In the United States, companies often have strict guidelines regarding manager-employee relationships. Zucker has been at the helm of CNN, one of the world’s most popular news channels, since 2013. (AFP/No)
