French commuters have had a troubled Christmas weekend: French railways have canceled a third of trains due to the strike, with TGV high-speed trains hit hard. About 200,000 Christmas travelers were frantically trying to book flights or rental cars.
Train commuters in France can breathe a sigh of relief on New Year’s weekend: the impending New Year’s weekend train strike has been averted. Railway giant SNCF and four unions reached an agreement on pay on the Friday before Christmas. The chaos over the Christmas weekend was unchanged.
SNCF train attendants began the strike on Thursday evening, which was announced until Monday morning. There was also a strike forecast and fears of mass cancellations over the New Year’s weekend.
The strike hits French people particularly hard over the Christmas weekend, as trains are often fully booked in advance and travel is only possible through seat reservations.

Great Britain is also currently gripped by an unprecedented wave of strikes. Passport control, rail transport, postmen, highway maintenance services or nurses and ambulance drivers – with high inflation and years without salary increases, they all demand significantly more money.
However, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is still unwilling to negotiate higher wages – saying he is “saddened and disappointed” by the number of strikes.
