In April 2021, UEFA decided to Champions League reform from the 2024/25 season. In the hype around the possibility of introducing the European Premier League, the FA’s decision was almost lost. Now, however, the fix is once again a topic of debate, especially the much-discussed four-character wildcard.
Among other things, this would ensure that two teams would be allowed to participate in the first division, even though they could not qualify through the league. The basis of this is the position in the UEFA club rating for five years. This means that the two teams with the best coefficients, who haven’t played their way onto the field in the usual way, can still stay there.
PSG Sheikh and Kahn are fighting for wildcards
This point of reform is being pursued in particular by the European Club Association (ECA), with its president, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi (48). He and his deputy, Bayern Munich president Oliver Kahn (52), want UEFA to demand regulations more forcefully. This was announced by the General Assembly on March 29.
The Egyptian Chefs Association’s opponents in this project are the European Patrols. For its part, the European League, to which the Saudi Football Association also belongs, wants to give more national champions a permanent place in the Champions League.
Ten new group matches in the first division
What about the other two alternatives? One of them was awarded by the League, which is in fifth place in the UEFA classification. The French Ligue 1 will currently have an additional starting place. The 4th free ticket is awarded to the National Champion who ranks first in the club rankings, but must pass through to qualify.
The reform of the bylaw also includes very important changes. The number of teams will be increased from 32 to 36. Each team plays ten team matches against opponents selected from the seed list. The top eight places advance from the overall standings list directly, setting 9 to 24 playoffs for the remaining places in the round of 16. (Che)
