Shabnam Mubarez, captain of the Afghanistan women’s soccer team, talks about the current situation in an interview.
After the Taliban captured Kabul, there was no effort left in Afghanistan. Many people have fled the country – including practically the entire women’s national football team.
The selected group has now found shelter in Australia. “The government is taking care of them, they are safe there,” explains Shabnam Mubarez, captain of the national team. Mubarez herself lives in the United States, but is in close contact with her teammates.
She does not believe that a woman will be able to play football again in her country one day. “I see no future, no light.” Women are currently at risk of being killed if they pursue their hobby. “It’s just crazy,” the 26-year-old said in a sad voice.
Mubarez sees a kind of “national team in exile” as the only way out. “I hope to be a team outside Afghanistan and represent Afghanistan as we know it before,” the midfielder said.
