Capcom Announces New Resident Evil: Is Resident Evil 9 Coming?

Capcom has officially announced that a new Resident Evil game is in development. The project is being led by Koshi Nakanishi, the game director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Confirmation and development details

During the Capcom Next Summer 2024 stream, it was confirmed that a new entry in the popular survival horror series is in the works. “Planning what’s next after Resident Evil 7 has been difficult, but we’ve found a direction that looks promising,” Nakanishi said. “Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any details yet, but I hope you’re as excited as we are.”

Nakanishi has already contributed heavily to Resident Evil 7. He has also been involved in Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and Resident Evil 5.

Sequel or new spin-off?

Although Capcom has confirmed that a new Resident Evil game is in development, no title has been explicitly mentioned for Resident Evil 9. This has led to speculation that Capcom may be working on a new entry. Leaks and rumors suggest that the new game could be an open-world title. This would be a major departure from the series’ previous linear structures.

Looking back at previous leaks

In May 2024, we reported on leaks suggesting that Resident Evil 9 would be released in January 2025. This information came from an insider at Dusk Golem, who also mentioned that the game could have the biggest budget in the series to date and could be revealed at Summer Game Fest. This long development time and high investment point to a particularly ambitious project.

References to Resident Evil 9

Despite speculation about a possible split, it's possible that Capcom is also planning further development on a larger scale. Much like Nintendo did with the Zelda series with Breath of the Wild. The fact that Nakanishi didn't mention a title for Resident Evil 9 could mean that the new entry will be released under a different name, similar to Resident Evil Village.

In addition to this announcement, Capcom has also confirmed plans to remake Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica. These revelations, coupled with the recent successes of Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village, underscore Capcom's commitment to continued expansion and innovation of the series.

The confirmation of a new Resident Evil game has generated a lot of excitement among fans. With Koshi Nakanishi, who has already had a huge success with Resident Evil 7, at the helm of development, you can look forward to what’s coming next. Whether it’s Resident Evil 9 or a new spin-off remains to be seen. One thing is for sure: the Resident Evil series remains a mainstay of the survival horror genre and promises exciting and nerve-wracking experiences in the future.
