Violent patriarchal allegations against Canadian regional politician John Reyes (49). While he’s watching tennis on late Friday nights, his wife Cynthia works as a nurse on a 12-hour night shift in the hospital. When she comes home on Saturday morning, she also sweeps the driveway into her house of fresh snow. And what does John Reyes do?
Instead of helping, he films his wife from the window of the warm room – and posts the photo on Twitter. “Even after a 12-hour night shift in the hospital, my wife still had the energy to sweep the aisle,” the politician writes. “May God bless you and all the Mujahideen at the front. It’s time to prepare your breakfast.”
“Why didn’t you do that?”
The post has now been shared more than 27,000 times. Many of the 17,000-plus comments vehemently disagree with Manitoba’s Economic Development Minister: “Why didn’t you do that?” One Twitter user writes, for example. “And if for some reason you can’t do it yourself, why not pay someone to do it for you so you can go home, find a clean driveway, and go straight to bed? What’s wrong with you?”
Another comment indicated that Reyes was commenting on a tennis match on Twitter just hours earlier. One Twitter user wrote: “You were up at 2:45am watching tennis while your wife worked a 12-hour shift in hospital during a pandemic.” “Then I snapped a picture of her from your warm house, sweeping up your driveway. Good luck, man. You’ve kept people out of my life for so much less.”
Take it under protection
In the outburst of outrage at her husband’s macho behavior, Cynthia Reyes joined the discussion on Twitter: “All I wanted to do was shovel,” the nurse said. In a detailed Facebook post, she explained that she got home before anyone woke up.
When she made it to her driveway, she “felt the energy needed to get rid of the snow that had been falling all night and into the morning.” That was a great workout and allowed her to stop working out. In addition, the air was fresh, after all, she was wearing a mask all night long. The weather was mild and it was calm and peaceful.”
Husband Reyes justified it Canadian broadcaster CBC: “My wife is wonderful, both at home and at work. I am so grateful to her and all that she does. I love you so much.” He is happy that she is receiving the “universal recognition she deserves”. One cannot do enough to show gratitude to healthcare workers. (No)
