Regensburg.of The World Baseball Classic Qualifiers are open. The official start of this year’s European baseball highlight was presented with a festive ceremony on Friday. The first of nine World Cup qualifiers was already underway. In a thrilling battle, tournament favorites Spain edged South Africa 5:4.
Justin Connell put the Iberians ahead with a solo home run against Justin Erasmus, the South African opener known from the Bundesliga. The former Heidenheimer turned in an otherwise solid performance. The Spaniards extended their lead to 2-0 only after the former Heidekop was substituted. Connell circled the bases again.
Then the South African players were stunned. In the seventh inning, Tyrone Milne and Benjamin Smith tied the game 2-2. Spain, on the other hand, immediately gave the correct answer. With three runs, the 2013 WBC finalist took the lead in a straight comeback. However, South Africa did not give up yet and came back again, but the Iberians kept their nerve.

The German national team will be in action this Saturday evening (7pm). National coach Steve Johnson’s team will face Great Britain, who won against France on Friday evening with a score of 14:4.
