When it debuted in the summer of 2013, it was considered the most modern and advanced car in its class: BMW i3. It wasn’t because of its electric motor at the time. Because at that time there were already competitors to Stromer Nissan LeafAnd Renault Zoe and the Tesla Model S.
However, BMW, along with the other three brands, is one of the pioneers of modern electric mobility. The i3 concept was really revolutionary due to its aluminum frame, carbon body structure and plastic cladding. The 2013 i3 was also ahead of its time with natural fibers and recycled materials inside. On the other hand, anti-opening doors were an unnecessary gimmick like the hawk doors in Tesla Model X.
High technology without access
Unfortunately, not all lightweight construction technologies had a positive impact on the range. At first, with 190 kilometers on the old test cycle, it wasn’t great. Only later, with more massive batteries, there was a longer range – recently up to 310 kilometers by the current standard.
This gave better sales figures for the i3 and extended BMW production for another two years. While newer models usually start out strong and then drop as well, the i3 is selling better and better as time goes on. But now, after nine years and producing nearly 250,000 cars, it’s over. BMW finally stopped production of the i3 in July. There will be no successor.
More space and natural look
According to BMW, the behavior of customers in the small and compact car segment has changed, according to the German “Automobilwoche”. Customers wanted more space and a more classic design for electric cars. Thus, the i3 engine was supposed to be a loss-making business for BMW on its own. According to experts, the development cost more than two billion Swiss francs. On the other hand, all current and future BMW electric vehicles benefit from the experience and know-how gained from the i3 project.
From summer, you will plant in Leipzig New 2 Series Active Tourer Building. The new Mini Countryman will follow next year as a combustion engine, and a hybrid and electric version. This provides with Dim mini electric and the BMW iX1 electric legacy i3. However, her model assignment is not going to completely disappear. It’ll stick to the rear of the electric 3 Series in the future – but only in China.
