BMW recalls SUV and 4 Series Coupé
The sunroof closes from a great distance
BMW is having to recall 61,000 vehicles in the US due to incorrect programming of the sunroof remote control.
11 meters against BMW: Because the sunroofs may close even though the car key is more than 11 meters away, BMW has to recall different models of SUV and 4 Series Grand Coupé. About 61,000 vehicles are affected in the United States. This is what the NHTSA, the US equivalent of the German Federal Transport Authority (KBA) has ordered. In addition to three variants of the 4 Series Grand Coupé, the X5, X6, X7 SUV and the Alpina XB7 variant are also affected by the software problem.
Models affected by the recall:
- 4 Series Gran Coupé (430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive) Model Year 2022
- X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i and X5M model years 2019 to 2022
- Model X5 xDrive45e from 2021 to 2022
- X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X6 xDrive50i, and X6M model years 2020 to 2022
- X7 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive50i, X7 M50i, X7 xDrive60i, X7 M60i, X7M, Alpina XB7 model years 2019 to 2023
Reason for recall: Safety Guide 118 for Powered Window Systems states that windows and sunroofs may be closed remotely only when the key is within 11 meters of the vehicle.
However, due to incorrect programming, the sunroofs on affected models can also be closed from a greater distance. To solve the problem, a new software is required, which can be transferred to the car in the workshop or via an over-the-air update.
According to BMW, no cars in Germany are affected by this problem. In the US, the manufacturer wants to notify all affected vehicle owners by mid-June.
The summons can be found in the NHTSA under case number 22V267.
With the remote control extending so far, BMW has to improve 61,000 of its large SUVs and M4 Gran Coupe. However, only in the USA.
