German cycling talent Marius Mayrhofer celebrates his first professional victory. The 22-year-old won the World Tour Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race in Geelong, Australia.

After 174.3 kilometers, the Tübingen sprinter was faster than Frenchman Hugo Page and Australian Tour stage winner Simon Clarke. Mayrhofer was already in the spotlight last week with two top-ten finishes at the Tour Down Under.

“It means everything to me. I won my last race as a junior. I’ve been cycling to win races. I haven’t been able to do that my whole U23 time and now I finally got this win,” Mayrhofer said. He started a tactically quick sprint and eventually won with a bike-length lead. “I dreamed of this win for a long time and I can’t believe what happened.”

Mayrhofer is under contract with Team DSM and is in his second year as a professional. Swabian sees himself as a classic driver and wants to shine in the races one day. Mayerhofer’s dream is to win the World Cup. In 2018, he grabbed the spotlight on a big stage in the junior race of the Road Cycling World Championships in Innsbruck. Mayrhofer finished second on the tough course – behind reigning world champion and Vuelta winner Remko Evenboel from Belgium.
