New technologies are being used more and more frequently in top-class sports. This is also the case at FC Basel in penalty training.

Penalty shootouts are often referred to as a lottery. If the goalkeeper chooses the right corner, the shooter is out of luck.

It's not that simple, because the shooter has the ability to react to the goalkeeper – and change the direction of the shot at the last moment.

Duel with the “Eternal” avatar.

It is difficult to practice this using traditional methods, which is why Basel Club is relying on augmented reality in cooperation with the University of Freiburg. The shooter wears special virtual reality glasses in which his projected avatar stands between the columns.

The main advantages are:

  • A virtual ranger can walk around for hours without sustaining any injury.
  • The software can motivate a goalkeeper to drop down to a fraction of a second.
  • The difficulty level can be adjusted to suit the shooter.

The goal of long-range training is to reduce the time it takes the player to change the direction of the shot. And according to preliminary studies with youngsters, this works: the success rate from the point can be increased by 35 percent.
