At the end of the first training session of the week on Tuesday morning, there was the Bayern Munich stars’ “favorite exercise” as a small addition: fitness professor Dr. Holger Breusch called for short sprints – three round trips of about 15 metres. Everything about 10 times in a row. Then some stars fell exhausted to the floor – Matisse de Ligt (22 years old) also had to blow, but he stopped and relaxed and went towards the dressing room. The new defense star looks a lot fitter than he was at first, and has also done well in the sprints.
De Ligt in a duel with Sturm-Juwel Tel
In his first two competitive matches, Julian Nagelsmann (35) left the Dutchman off the bench, entering the role of Joker. Instead of De Ligt, Dayot Opicano (23) played alongside Lucas Hernandez (26) in the heart of the defense. Because de Ligt wasn’t one hundred percent yet, Nagelsmann didn’t want to risk anything.
But now De Ligt is running at full throttle to get the position of Chief Defense!
On a training-free Monday, like the previous week, he did an extra hard session with Mathis Till (17) and Kingsley Coman (26).
In Tuesday’s training match, he already took on the role of head defence: Nagelsmann put him in a squad that includes Davies, Pavard and Upamecano – a potential string for the match against Wolfsburg on Sunday. Does that mean playing for the new Defense Manager this week?
As always, de Ligt seemed very enthusiastic in training and made a good impression in “Series A”. De Ligt is getting closer and closer, Nagelsmann explained last week: “He’s going to be a very important player for us. Just how he coaches every action in the drills. But he still needs some time.”
But one thing is also clear: even Bayern Munich will not hire a defender for a fee of 77 million to the bank – it is very likely that Sunday will see the debut of the new Dutch star…
