Leipzig. OBM Burkhard Jung (SPD) from Leipzig will be on the plane to Texas on Tuesday. The reason for his two-day trip is the city’s partnership between Leipzig and Houston, which has been in place for 30 years. The round figure will also be honored with an official visit from the federal government: Young will accompany Federal Foreign Minister Annalina Baerbock (Green Party) on her trip to the United States, which will also take her to other cities.

Among other things, a conversation is scheduled between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the mayors of the two cities and members of the respective partnership societies. “Over the past 30 years, a very close relationship has grown between Leipzig and Houston, backed by a lot of passion and commitment,” Young said before leaving. “City partnerships thrive through citizens, by getting to know each other personally and sharing ideas.”
“Fixed Transatlantic Connection”
In addition to the close relationship in the fields of business, culture and education, Young emphasizes very close personal contacts. “In the past three decades, a strong, mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship has grown.”

The partnership between the two cities was signed in 1993. The Leipzig-Housten Circle of Friends was established the year before. To this day there are many student residencies and mutual studies. The exchange is strongly supported by the Leipzig Thomasgemeinde and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Houston – in addition to the close economic and scholarly ties mentioned above.
A choir from Houston visits the Bach Festival in Leipzig
In 2018, the 25th anniversary of the City Partnership was celebrated with a trip by the citizens of Leipzig to Houston. Leipzig also organized a whole week of festivals. This year the Bach Houston Choir performed in Leipzig, among others, at the Bach Festival.
