The fire broke out on Elizabeth Street near Central Station in the Surry Hills district on Thursday, the Sydney Morning Herald quoted police as saying. More than 50 people were evacuated from the building, according to broadcaster 9News.
The fire brigade has announced that more than 100 emergency services have been deployed with around 20 vehicles. The seven-story building began to collapse. Videos on local media showed the roof collapsing and part of the facade falling down. According to ABC, the fire appears to have started on the third floor, said Fire Chief Adam Dewberry. The building is said to be an old factory that was to be converted into a hotel. Nearby houses were also evacuated for fear of the fire spreading. A parked car also caught fire.
Clouds of thick black smoke are said to be visible across the city in the afternoon (local time). Several roads in the area were closed.
