Exploitation: Ricky Petrocciani wins silver in the 400 metres.
Ricky Petrociani ensures that the Swiss stand out in athletics at the European Grand Prix in Munich. The 22-year-old from Ticino won the silver in the 400m. With a time of 45.03 seconds, Petrucciani came within a hundredth of a second of his personal best from the previous year after a mixed season and only had to make way for superior Briton Matthew Hudson Smith (44.53).
As usual, Petrucciani got off to a quick start and, unlike the season so far, his pace has only slowed marginally over his home stretch. His reserve for 3rd (Alex Haydock-Wilson) and 4th (Liemarvin Bonevacia) places was 14 hundredths. Lionel Spitz finished seventh with a time of 45.66 seconds.
For Petrucciani, this is the greatest success to date. Last year he won the gold medal in the European Under-23 Championships. “The silver medal after such a rotten season, it’s unbelievable. When I looked to the left in the last few meters and saw that I could finish in second place, I gave everything I had and it worked,” Petrochiani said overjoyed in an interview with Swiss TV. (SDA)
