Esther Staubli, the only female referee in the Premier League, has suddenly announced her resignation.
The Premier League is losing its only female referee. The Swiss Football Association announced on Monday that Esther Staubli will resign with immediate effect. The 44-year-old, from Bern, wants to break new ground, according to the press release
Stubley played her last match as a referee last Friday in the Women's Nations League semi-final in Lyon. “With the France-Germany match, my work as an active referee has come full circle with one final international event. “By participating in the UEFA Nations League finals, I was able to fulfill one last dream,” says Staubli.
Swiss pioneer
Staubli looks back on a long career. Among other things, the Bernese player has played in three Women's World Cups (2015, 2019, 2023) and was part of the squad for three European Championships (2013, 2017, 2022).
She was also the first Swiss woman to referee a men's international match in November 2023 with the Nations League match between Azerbaijan and Sweden.
