Online video platform Tiktok has been targeted by a group of US states due to the potential for putting young users at risk.
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said a nationwide investigation should clarify whether Tiktok poses any risks to children, teens and young adults. Tiktok did not comment at first.
The investigation also aims to examine whether Tiktok is aware of the potential risks to young people and may increase them in a targeted manner. As examples, Healey cites methods and techniques to increase the engagement and time that younger users spend on the platform.
Healy talks about a coalition of 44 US attorneys general that already successfully lobbied Facebook’s parent company Meta in May 2021 to bury plans to release Instagram for kids. However, Allianz launched a Meta investigation in November last year.
Internet networks such as Instagram and Tiktok have long been criticized for the lack of protection for children and young people and the alleged negative effects on the physical health of young people. The question is always whether companies are doing enough to prevent bullying or age-inappropriate content. (dpa)
