“The decision was reported to the government yesterday,” Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash said in a statement.
Amazon Studios wants to continue post-production work on the first season in New Zealand until June 2022. From the second season, filming will take place in the United Kingdom. Nash said Amazon wants to expand its manufacturing space in the UK and expand its presence.
The American company spends $ 465 million to film the first season alone. As a result, New Zealand is withdrawing a five per cent financial subsidy from the film production subsidy. According to the government, another 20 per cent subsidy has already been utilized.
Amazon has been filming in Auckland since last year and has hired more than 1,200 people to produce. The New Zealand government says another 700 people are indirectly involved. The positive effects on New Zealand’s economy and tourism are expected over the years.
Amazon Studios plans to produce five seasons of the series, which will be the most expensive TV series of all time.
