American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was fined an additional $45.2 million for false claims about the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
He has now reportedly paid out a total of $49 million in damages to the parents of one of his victims. Several US media outlets reported this Friday from a courtroom in Texas. He was already awarded damages of more than US$4 million on Thursday.
Friday’s ruling is for so-called punitive damages, which are intended to act as a deterrent and often exceed actual damages. Jones previously stated that the December 2012 shoot was conducted by the cast. A 20-year-old man shot and killed 20 schoolchildren and 6 teachers in Newtown, Connecticut.
The parents of a six-year-old boy who was killed then sued the right-wing radio host over his allegations. You previously described the emotional suffering caused by the lies of a 48-year-old man. They asked for $150 million in damages. The conspiracy theorist’s lawyer argued that the plaintiffs failed to prove that his client’s words actually caused harm.
Jones has repeatedly floated various conspiracy theories in the past, for example, claiming that the US government was involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York.
