Emir of Qatar: Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (42).
In the mid-18th century, the Bedouins moved to what is now Qatar. One of these Bedouin tribes was the Al Thani clan. They settled in the settlement of Al-Bida. These later developed into Doha, the current capital of Qatar. The head of the family at the time, Sheikh Muhammad Al Thani, became the most powerful force and thus the founder of the ruling family in Qatar, the Al Thani dynasty, which is still prevalent today.
The man who rules the country today is Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (42). He has three wives and twelve children. In 2013, when he was just 33 years old, he took power in Qatar from his father, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (70 years old). With a wealth of coveted oil and gas resources, he laid the foundation for modern Qatar.
The disputed ruler
Sheikh Tamim also greatly expanded the influence of the small peninsula. He grew up in Britain, and attended the famous Sandhurst Military Academy. Then he took on various duties in the principality: among other things, he was deputy commander of the army and head of the National Olympic Committee. This is how Tamim, a sports lover, brought the World Cup to Qatar.
Al-Thani occupies the most important positions in politics and business. The extended family clan includes at least 20,000 people. Despite his moderate behavior, the prince is considered a controversial ruler. For example, he is said to have links to the Islamic Brotherhood.
