- According to the US National Archives, after leaving the White House, former President Donald Trump packed at least 700 pages of classified documents.
- Some of them have been rated at the highest levels of confidentiality, according to a letter to Trump’s lawyer released by the archive.
- These are the documents stored in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that were found by the FBI during the raid two weeks ago.
On Tuesday, the US media unanimously reported the letter dated May 10, and the “New York Times” published it on the Internet. The letter states that the government should “make an assessment of the potential damage resulting from the apparent manner in which these materials have been stored and transported”.
The now-published exchange between the authority and Trump’s defense attorney occurred months before the FBI’s federal police searched the former president’s property.
Documents can become public
Trump has argued that he has declassified documents seized from his presidency. Current presidents have far-reaching powers of declassification. But for the release of documents, there is a formal procedure that includes several very formal steps. Trump also claimed that there are standing interview instructions in place for all documents taken home.

Last Monday, Trump filed a lawsuit against the US government, demanding the use of an impartial auditor to examine the latest confiscated documents and halting all investigations until then.
Trump’s taking of the documents would be a criminal act. The 76-year-old describes the Justice Department’s actions against him as politically motivated, as he has been flirting for weeks with the idea of running for president again in 2024. Legal disputes are also currently underway over whether at least some of the documents on which he was based can be published. Mar-a-Lago search command.
