A polar bear has been seen far from its range in southern Canada. According to reports from authorities and eyewitnesses, the animal appeared on Saturday morning in the small village of Madeleine Center near the Saint Lawrence River.
“Our dog barked and I heard my husband screaming, There’s a bear! There’s a bear! Quebec police urged caution. Residents of the Madeleine Center should stay indoors and not go out.
As a result of climate change?
Bonneville said people initially thought she was joking. However, I was able to capture several evidence photos of the animal before it disappeared into the woods. “No one has ever experienced anything like this here. How can a bear cross an ice pack into a river, swim across it, and get here?”
Otherwise, polar bears would not be seen even on the other side of the Saint Lawrence River. She suspected it might be the result of climate change.
According to a study published in Nature Climate Change in 2020, climate change could lead to the near extinction of polar bears because their natural habitat – the ice pack – continues to melt. (AFP/Jane)
