It’s a prototype: Leica No. 105 Series 0. The 35mm camera is a milestone in modern photography. On Saturday, the piece broke the world record for the most expensive camera ever. The previous record holder – also a Series 0 Leica – was sold at auction in 2018 for €2.4 million.
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Letz Photography auction, which takes place twice a year, featured an unusual exhibition: the nearly 100-year-old Leica was hammered – one of the first 35mm cameras ever built. In 1923 and 1924, 23 prototypes of this camera were made.
Vintage much in demand
Number 105 of the 0 series belongs personally to Oskar Barnack (1879-1936), who is credited with inventing the 35mm format. According to the auction house in Wetzlar, Germany, the world record illustrates the continuing trend in recent years: “prices are going up,” the camera manufacturer quotes Ica auction house. “The interest in old cameras is greater than ever.” (bag)
