Jeff Bezos, 57, is not an astronaut. But he is the richest person in the world. Therefore, he can afford a trip to space. Bezos shared on Instagram: “I’ve dreamed of traveling to space since I was five years old.” The billionaire is now participating with his brother on the first manned flight for Blue Origin, which he founded in 2000.
It has not yet been decided who will accompany him beside his brother. Recently, Blue Origin Auction started. More than 5,200 bidders from 136 countries applied for a seat in the cockpit. The highest bid in the current second round is $2.8 million.
Ushered in the era of space tourism?
57-year-old Bezos is likely to start a new space era with his trip, where tourists can also see the blue planet from a distance – for a fee. So far, this has only been possible for trained astronauts.
British billionaire Richard Branson also plans to bring guests into space through Galactic Holdings. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, president of Tesla’s space company SpaceX, is supposed to take astronauts to the moon.
Bezos announced his retirement from Amazon’s senior management in February, and said at the time that he would focus more on his foundation, the Washington Post and Blue Origin as well as his other interests. (SDA / noo)
