A week ago, a fox killed almost the entire colony of red flamingos at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo. 13 of the 15 animals died.

“Unfortunately an error occurred. “We forgot to bring the animals into the indoor enclosure,” a zoo spokeswoman confirmed to the Austrian news agency APA on Monday, according to a report by Vienna’s Kurier newspaper.
According to the zoo, animals are usually brought into the indoor enclosure after closing time – depending on temperatures. It should have happened that night too. But that did not happen and the protective electric fence was not activated either.
The zoo said Monday that it deeply regrets the mistake. The problem of having foxes in the zoo is well known and there are already extensive preventive measures in place. The zoo will now set up live traps. The remaining two birds were handed over to Schmieding Zoo in Upper Austria. There is only one colony of flamingos left at Schönbrunn Zoo. These are pink flamingos. (SDA/APA)
