Mario Balotelli addresses the Basel crowd and shows the finger.
Mario Balotelli risks booking his vacation earlier than expected. FC Sion still has two matches to play before the winter break in 2022, but the Italian player could be banned by the Swiss Football League’s disciplinary committee in the next few days.
Angry “Super Mario”
Reason: “Super Mario” lost during Basel Valley Draw nerves. Balotelli thought he had made a foul, the referee did not intervene, and after the procedure, Sion’s Balthazar was sent off after slapping Dan Ndwi.
The Italian star was so upset that he gave Basel a support finger in the 58th minute. ‘Balo’ had already traded some provocations with Muttenzer’s curve during the break.
Constantine’s reaction
Christian Constantin, whom Blake called on the phone after the match, was upset. “There’s an indisputable fault with Mario before that scene and the red card is against us,” said Sion’s boss. “If the whistle goes off, none of this will happen. As for the finger I haven’t seen the pictures yet. But if VAR didn’t interfere, it would be for me.”
This gesture was not observed by Alain Peyerry in Basel, nor by video assistant referee Fedaye Sainte. But TV pictures owe Balotelli. He faces a two-game suspension.
Three precedents and the same punishment
At least that’s the penalty imposed in mid-October on Winterthur winger Samir Ramisi, who was found guilty of the accusing finger of GC fans. There are other ‘precedents’: former Lausanne goalkeeper Morey Diao against Servette last season and former Geneva international Alex Schalke at Sion in 2019. Here, too, the perpetrators were later sent to the stands for both games.
FC Sion coach Paolo Tramzani declined to comment on Sunday in Basel. “I found out when I left the field. Let’s put it this way: you confused me a bit.”
‘Not a gesture in the field’
Mario Balotelli’s teammate, goalkeeper Heinz Lindner, also failed to see the scene that happened on the other side of the field. “If it really does happen, it’s not a gesture that belongs on a football field,” he said.
