50,000 railway workers are on strike in England
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the UK faces its biggest rail strike in more than 30 years.
Train passengers in Great Britain should be prepared for long waits: more than 50,000 staff will be on strike on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, according to British Railways Union RMT. It is the biggest strike on British rail transport for more than 30 years. On Tuesday, London Underground workers also want to stop work for 24 hours.
The reason for the industrial action was the failure of negotiations over wage hikes. According to the RMT, the union had demanded a 7.1 percent pay rise in December due to high inflation. Criticism of the strike came from Transport Secretary Grant Shabbs: he said the union was “punishing millions of innocent people instead of calmly discussing the reforms that are needed”.
