What is your share of this success?
Arno del Corto: Maybe 1 or 2 percent. No idea, you have to ask guys.
At Christmas you said ice hockey was history for you. Now this position with Austria. Are you happy to be in the World Cup?
I’m 66 and I don’t have that long to live. I enjoyed a lot of joy in the World Cup. Nobody can take that from me. When I was 44, I was probably thinking about what I once said. But at 66, I no longer have to. And yes, I’m glad I did.
For any reason?
Being with these guys, working with them and talking about how they’ve been successful – it was amazing. Playing eyeballs against the big countries at the World Cup was really cool. What this team has achieved is incredible, they have grown something big together. With 10 players earning less than 30 thousand euros a year!
What did you actually get in return for your commitment?
182 euros per day. But the trip to the training camp in Linz, for example, cost me about 500 francs. In the end I probably didn’t get a single franc. But I don’t care at all, I enjoyed doing it for these guys. It also gave me the freedom to withdraw at any time if I no longer wanted to.
When did you decide to travel to the World Cup?
The evening before departure. I told them to book me a plane ticket. If I didn’t show up, I would have paid for it.
So what’s next for Arno del Corto and ice hockey?
I really want to have a barbecue on Friday night, golf on Saturday and go to the pool on Sunday. But I won’t say anymore that I don’t do anything anymore. But I’m not going to lead the club anymore – there is no chance. But who knows, maybe I will help again.
So maybe there is a future with Austria?
That’s a long way now. There were already players who wanted me to shake hands to keep going. But then I pulled them away and said let’s have a little beer first.
