- As expected, Canada (5:3 against Germany) and the United States (4:1 against Latvia) launched the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland with victories.
- Host Finland also beat Norway thanks to the mercenaries of the National League.
- Slovakia is struggling against the French team to win 4-2.
Group A
Germany – Canada 3:5 – Canada is off to a good start in their mission to defend their title. But against Germany, the favorite trembled unnecessarily towards the end of the match. The match appears to have already been decided after the 40th minute. With three goals in six minutes – including two hits of play power – “Ahornblätter” managed a 5:1 finish in third. Germany brought the tension back into the match in the final section with two goals, a double advantage, but the goal did not come again.
France – Slovakia 2: 4 – 2-0-2-2-4-2: Slovakia secured their first victory in the Swiss Group A against outside France. Pavol Regenda excelled in Helsinki as a top scorer. The Czech winger in Boleslav opened the scoring in the 11th minute and emptied the winner with 8 seconds left. France initially had hope in third when Anthony Rich and Jordan Perrett made it 2-2. But Samuel Takac put the Beijing Olympic bronze medalists back on track before the second siren sounded 3-2.

Finland 5-0 Norway Finland was able to count on the “Swiss faction” for its trouble-free opening victory over its neighbor Norway. Langenau striker Harry Pessonen (1: 0/19) and Toni Ragala, Biel’s top scorer (2: 0/32) put the hosts on the road to victory. One National League player was also concerned about the last point: Jerry Salinen, like Raggala, scored a contract with Bale, to make it 5-0.
USA – Latvia 4:1 – Elvis Merzlikins made a real false start to the World Cup with Latvia.
