A bombing took place in the center of the eastern city of Kharkiv, on Sunday, Ukrainian media reported, killing at least five people and wounding 13 others, according to preliminary information. According to the authorities, at least three civilians were killed on Saturday as a result of artillery and rocket shelling. The district’s governor, Oleh Sinihopov, said 31 people were injured.
AFP journalists heard two waves of attacks on Sunday and saw several fires spreading through residential neighborhoods in the center of the country’s second largest city, causing roofs to collapse.

With about 1.5 million inhabitants, the regional capital Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine and is only about 40 kilometers from the Russian border. The city has been hotly contested since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
So far, the Russian forces have not been able to control Kharkiv. Governor Oleh Senehubov said Thursday that more than 500 civilians had been killed in the area. The information cannot be independently verified. (ct/SDA/AFP)
