The North American team, with Basel player Liam Millar on his side (non-playable), secured his spot in the November tournament in Qatar in the penultimate round of qualifying thanks to a 4-0 home win over Jamaica.
The only World Cup in Canada so far was in Mexico in 1986. In the current qualifiers, the Canadians are going with confidence, although they recently lost their best known player in Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies.
Davis is crying with joy
He watched the match from home and totally freaked out when Cyle Laurin made it 1-0, as seen on his Instagram story. When the game ended, the 21-year-old couldn’t hold back his tears while broadcasting live on Twitch.
“It’s over. We are going to the World Cup,” said the Bayern Munich star. But he also explains: “This is the first and last time I’ve seen him cry in the stream.”
The United States and Mexico almost through
The United States (5-1 against Panama) and Mexico (1-0 in Honduras), the two favorites in the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers, are not yet sure of the World Cup, but they are almost certain.
Both are three points ahead of Thursday’s final round and outperform fourth-placed Costa Rica on goal difference, which are sent into worst-case scenarios (against the Oceania representative). (SDA/CHI)
