Armand Duplantis is the name of the new Olympic pole vaulting champion. The Swede dominated the competition on Tuesday afternoon German time and, as expected, took home his first Olympic gold. The 21-year-old was the only jumper to break the 6.02m mark.
Surprising silver medalist Chris Nielsen (USA) had three failed attempts at this height. On the other hand, Armand Duplantis did not make a single mistake until the height of the victory, and even tried his hand at 6.19 meters immediately after his Olympic victory, which meant setting a new world record. The Vice World Champion showed that it would only be a matter of time before he beats this height.
On the first try, it initially looked like he would break a new world record. But his chest stuck to the crossbar and ruptured. The third attempt also revealed the great potential of the jump, but this time the bar didn’t want to stop. Armand Duplantis himself holds the current outdoor world record with 6.15 metres.
Bronze for Rio Olympic Champion Thiago Braz
The bronze in Tokyo went to Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro Thiago Braz of Brazil. With 5.87m he jumped the season’s best, but at 5.92m that was the end of the streak. In his Olympic victory four years ago, he jumped 6.03 meters.
Former world record holder Renaud Lavillenie (France) was already struggling with injury fears in the weeks leading up to matches. The next shock came when jumping: Instead of a carpet, the 34-year-old almost landed on the Mondo track. The Frenchman did not really find his way to the final. After an unsuccessful attempt with a height of 6.87 meters, he skipped the additional attempts and went straight to 5.92 meters. There he failed twice and finished seventh in the overall standings.
Oleg Zernickel and Bo Kanda Lita Behr took the ninth and eleventh places
The German players’ final match ended early. Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and Oleg Zernikel (ASV Landau) both failed at 5.80 metres. With reigning German champion Oleg Zernickel, the first attempt was almost a success. He reached the height, but when he fell, he touched the crossbar with his stomach. In the end, Landauer came in ninth place.
Bo Kanda Letta Baher, last year’s German champion, already had problems crossing the crossbar at 5.70 metres. He was only able to control this height on the third try. Ten centimeters high, he could no longer show such nerve strength, and finally ranked eleventh.
