When DJ Lagway arrives on campus in Gainesville, he will immediately compete for a starting job as the starting quarterback on the football team.
But the five-star commit is also a talented baseball player, and could follow a similar path to freshman Max Brown, according to Jacob Rudner of 247Sports. Brown served as a backup outfielder for Kevin O’Sullivan on the baseball team, but his priority was football his senior year.
[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]Lagoway will enroll early in the spring and will use this time to figure out his “daily routine” and “focus on everything football related.” His involvement with the baseball team — which has just begun fall ball practice — should be little to no during his first full year of college.
“Maybe next spring, or the spring after that if need be, so we can be ready to play some baseball,” Lagoway said.
Lagoway is certainly talented enough to balance the workload and busy schedule that comes with being a two-sport athlete, but Florida has one of the most competitive baseball programs in the country. Waiting an entire year can cause it to get lost in the shuffle.
It’s good to see Lagway sticking to the football. Florida needs an elite quarterback. A player who – no disrespect to Graham Mertz – can throw the deep ball. If he can be a Day 1 starter by giving up baseball, it seems like it would be worth it.
