4:3 Victory over the US – Finns battle for World Cup title at home – Sport

  • Finland won the Ice Hockey World Championship semi-finals against the USA 4:3.
  • Geneva players Sami Vatanen and Langnaus Harry Pessonen also collected the scorers’ points.
  • In the final, Sumi meets Canada on Sunday (7:20 p.m., SRF 2nd live). The Maple Leaf beat the Czech Republic 6:1 in the other semi-final match.

The penalty against the US had just ended when Joel Jeremiah started playing. The Finn grabbed defender Nate Schmidt between his legs and goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman over the glove. His 4-2 victory in the World Cup semi-final made the arena in Tampere roaring. The technically savvy Northern Europeans were rewarded for a solid performance against the young American team, as they seemed capable of becoming dangerous at any time with the push of a button.

The United States put it all on one card in the last minutes. While the Finns missed the decisive goal of a Khali goal, Adam Judit approached the Americans 3 minutes before the end of the match. Despite other good opportunities, “Lions” narrowly won.

Some “Swiss” support for the Finns

While Switzerland failed badly at the hands of the United States in the quarter-finals, at least two of the Finnish National League Corps, Harri Pessonen and Sami Vatanen, raised the Swiss flag for a while. The latter put “Suomi” on its course in the middle third. Half an hour later, Servette’s defender grabbed US goalkeeper Swayman between his legs and made it 3-2.

Lightning start for USA

Schmidt had given the US the lead 64 seconds after the first shot. Unlike the quarter-final win over Switzerland, the United States could not defend this lead. And in the third game, Miro Heskanen equalized with a superb backhand.

After the first break, the hosts played their turn perfectly with a majority: Sakkari Maninen (25) hit the disc superbly in the upper right corner after a pass from Langnaus Bissonen. However, after only two minutes, the American team found the correct answer. Sean Farrell scored again to equalize after a great solo performance. David Quinn’s first real team chance was to finish third. In the end, the efficiency of the United States could not help reach the final.

Finland has already become the world champion 3 times, most recently in 2019 in Slovakia. Address No. 4 will follow on Sunday at the Nokia Arena in Tampere. As in 2019 and 2021, Canada will be the opponent in the final match, which you can watch live from 7 p.m. on SRF zwei and in the SRF sports app.
