James Franco Takes Broadway’s ‘Sweet Bird of Youth’ Off His Calendar
It was originally announced last year that James Franco would be starring opposite Nicole Kidman in ‘Sweet Bird of Youth.’ The production was to be his Broadway debut. It seems the Francophiles out there will have to wait a little longer to see your favorite actor on theatre’s biggest stage.
Franco’s publicist Robin Baum has confirmed that the crazy busy actor has opted out of participating in the Tennessee Williams play. Kidman is still attached to the project though the director, David Cromer (The House of Blue Leaves), has confirmed it won’t launch this fall as previously anticipated. In an interview with the NY Times, Cromer stated he didn’t know when production would begin on ‘Sweet Bird’ given the lead producer is currently wrapped up in the Broadway revival of ‘Death of a Saleman.’
Franco was set to play Chance with Kidman taking on the role of Alexandra. ‘Sweet Bird of Youth’ originally debuted on Broadway in 1959 with leads Paul Newman and Geraldine Page. It found its way to the silver screen in 1962 featuring its Broadway stars. The plays only other revival was a brief six-week run in 1975 that featured the talents of Christopher Walken and Irene Worth. Worth would win the Tony for her portrayal of Alexandra.
After his Oscar nominated turn in ‘127 Hours,’ Franco can currently be seen in ‘The Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ which hit theaters earlier in the month. According to IMDB, Franco has 7 films currently in production as well as his reoccurring work on soap ‘General Hospital.’
